Anti-gay pageant answer comes back to haunt attorney general candidate

No sooner had a Miss America contestant resigned over a scandal involving nude photographs than the new Miss America became embroiled in a sex scandal of her own. This one isn't X-rated, however. Much to the consternation of the impresarios in Atlantic City, the newly crowned Miss America announced last month that during her yearlong reign she wanted to promote sexual abstinence for teenagers. We can imagine the pageant organizers' difficulties. Why couldn't Miss America be more like Miss America and choose a more politically correct topic like, say, taxpayer-funded condoms in the public schools or needle exchange for drug users, subjects the organization has been happy to bless?
All three women will speak at the American Conservative Union's conference this month. And they've each been named "Republican Babe of the Week" by a New Jersey-based Web site geared toward young, conservative men. Harold, of Downstate Urbana, may appear on a ballot soon, too. Wednesday she became an Illinois delegate to the Republican National Convention, a move that could mark the start of a political career for the Harvard Law student.
Atlantic City, N. The latest furor, though, has to do with NOT having sex. Miss America Erika Harold is insisting on promoting abstinence during her yearlong reign, to the chagrin of the pageant. Conservatives have rallied to her cause and accused the pageant of hypocrisy, giving the Miss America organization the kind of clobbering it usually gets from the left.
